Unsolicited Rideshare Advice
For Drivers And Riders
Driving for any rideshare or delivery service can require you to have vehicles that are certain models or years old. For instance, most will require a car no more than 10 years old for taking riders and no more than 15 years old for taking deliveries. The rules change, so be up to date on rideshare requirements.

Potential or current drivers might have the option of renting from a rental agency in their city. Your rideshare apps should have information about this option in order to drive for them. I myself have had to rent a car due to my own car being in an accident. So, I know how renting and owning a car is.

If you are in a situation where you need a car for long or short-term use, you should definitely take advantage of any options on your rideshare app. When I had to rent, I got a special discounted weekly rate for the rental. The exact savings vary depending on the rental agency and the model of car you rent. A lot of agencies are trying to phase out the gas-powered vehicles and go more electric.

It is important to remember that you do not need a car with a lot of fancy features. Most riders are not looking for a car that is fancy or high tech (self-driving, parking, etc.). These kinds of cars are most often more expensive to drive and the insurance for them can be more expensive. So, try to get simple models that have good features like backup camera or sync technology.

Renting a car can be a nice way to make money. However, the weekly rates can still be expensive when compared to owning your own car. For example, when I rented a car, the weekly rate was around $260, plus a daily insurance rate of $6 (which increased to $10 over time) for the same basic model. So, after fees and taxes, I ended up paying around $335/week for a basic model of car.

More fancier models of gas and electric cars can be closer to $325+/week and insurance of $15+/day. These are obviously rough estimates depending on what agency you rent from. The overall point is to calculate how much money you will need to make with rideshare/delivery in order to make the weekly rental rate, plus pay your bills as well.

Advantages of Renting:

1. Since you are renting, there is no big down payment to get a rental.
2. Some agencies do not require a deposit.
3. You are not committed to a loan agreement that can last for years.
4. Most agencies have weekly rentals; so, no long-term commitments.
5. Some agencies may not or do not require a background check.
6. If something breaks down on the car, the agency can get you into another one, if available. So, you may not have to worry about being unable to drive for long.
7. Rental car costs can be used as expenses during tax time (Depending on the country you reside in).
8. You do not have to stress about putting a lot of miles on the car, since it is not yours.
9. Some agencies offer a discounted weekly rental rate for being a rideshare driver.

Disadvantages of Renting:

1. The weekly rates and daily insurance can be more expensive than owning a car.
2. The insurance you purchase does not cover everything. Be sure to read the insurance carefully. You most likely will have the option of using your regular auto insurance on the car you rent.
3. Availability of rental is not guaranteed. Rental companies only have so many cars they can rent to rideshare drivers (since they also rent to regular customers). So, finding a rental car can be tricky, especially during holidays or if any models have been recalled.
4. Being late on the weekly rental payment can lead to an agency refusing to continue to rent to you.
5. There can be long waits to rent a car or just see a rental agent depending on demand for rentals, holiday season, etc.

Hopefully these bits of advice help you decide on whether to buy or rent a vehicle.
